phaṇ mc (साँप का ~) hood (of a snake); जब नाग अपना ~ उठाता है when a cobra raises its hood.

pher-phār mu (a) shuffling: रोज़गारों का ~ -- of jobs. (b) = फेर-बदल q. v. (c) ~ की बात trick. ~ करना to shuffle, to alter.

fās·lā mu distance [औसत average, लंबा long, थोड़ा short]; थोड़े फ़ासले पर at a short --; दो शहरों के बीच का ~ the -- between two cities; पचास किलोमीटर का ~ a -- of fifty kilometres. [syn. दूरी]

phaṛak·nā vi (a) to flutter: कबूतर के पंख हवा में फड़कते हैं the wings of a pigeon flutter in the air. (b) to throb: आँख फड़क रही है the eye is throbbing. (c) उसकी बोटी-बोटी फड़क रही थी he/she was extremely excited; वह खुशी से फड़क उठा he was thrilled with joy.

phã̄d·nā vt leap/skip over: रस्सी (नाला, जंगला) ~ -- a rope (rivulet, fence); मैं जल्दी-जल्दी पुस्तक के दो-तीन अध्याय फाँद गया I hurriedly skipped over two or three chapters of the book.

phuhārā mc fountain, shower = फ़ौवारा q. v.

phapholā mc boil, blister [घिनावना hideous, छोटा सा tiny, उभरता हुआ erupting]; उसकी बाँह पर एक ~ है he/she has a -- on his/her arm. [syn. छाला]

phur·tī fu agility, smartness = फुर्ती q. v.

¹ fiṭ mc fit [i.e. fainting] हिस्टीरिया (मिरगी, बीमारी) का ~ a -- of hysteria (epilepsy, illness); उसे ~ आता/पड़ता है he/she has a --.

phāṛ·nā vt [vide फटना vi] (a) कपड़ा या काग़ज़ ~ to tear cloth or paper; तुमने किसाब से पन्ना क्यों फाड़ा why did you tear a leaf from the book; उसने पत्र फाड़ डाला he/she tore up the latter; शेर पंजों से शिकार को फाड़ डालता/देता है the lion tears up his game with paws; फाड़ खाना to tear off and devour. (b) to split: लकड़ी ~ -- wood; बिजली ने पेड़ को दो टुकड़ो में फाड़ डाला the lightning split the old tree in half. (c) कान ~ to make a deafening noise; गला ~ to shriek; आँखें फाड़-फाड़ कर देखना to stare intently.
