paṛhānā vt (a) to teach: वह इतिहास पढ़ाती है she teaches history; हमारे एक अध्यापक हमें गणित पढ़ाते थे a teacher of ours taught us arithmetic; हमने तुम्हें हिन्दी पढ़ायी we taught you Hindi; स्कूल में क्या-क्या विषय पढ़ाये जाते है what subjects are taught at school? मैं बच्चों को पाठ पढ़ाऊँगा I'll teach the children a lesson. (b) to educate (also पढ़ाना-लिखाना): माँ- बाप ने तुम्हें पढ़ाया the parents educated you. (c) to make one read: मैंने उससे चिट्ठी पढ़ायी I made him/her read a letter. [from पढ़ना, n. पढ़ाई]

² pāī fc (Nagari) full-stop (।): वाक्य के अंत में ~ a -- at the end of a sentence; पाइयाँ two --s at the end of a couplet.

pūrti fu (a) fulfilment: उद्देश्य की ~ -- of an object; ~ करना to fulfil. (b) supply: माँग और ~ demand and supply; ~ करना to supply. (c) किसी की इच्छा की पूर्ति करना to satisfy smb's desire; अभाव की ~ करना to make up a deficiency.

pūjya a venerable: ~ पिता जी (माता जी, गुरुवर) --/dear father (mother, teacher).

pūjā fu (a) worship: देवताओं की ~ -- of gods; सूर्य की ~ sun- --; ~ की सामग्री articles for --; ~ करना to worship = पूजना q. v. (b) [jocularly] beating: मैं अभी तेरी ~ करूँगा I will just now beat you.

punarāvritti fu repetition: शब्दों या विचारों की ~ -- of words or ideas.

¹ pāl·na vt to bring up, to rear; बच्चों को ~ -- children; ऊन के लिए भेड़ें पाली जाती है sheep are reared for wool.
