bãṭānā vt (a) दुःख ~ to share smb's trouble. (b) किसी काम में हाथ ~ to give a helping hand in some work.

baṛhāvā mu encouragement, fillip; ~ देना to encourage = प्रोत्साहन q. v.

bahu- pref great [in number or quantity]: बहुमुखी multifaceted; बहुसंख्यक in majority, बहुवचन plural number; बहुरंगा multi-coloured; बहुमत majority; बहुमूल्य valuable; etc.

bãdh·nā vi (a) to be tied/ fastened: घोड़ा पेड़ से बँधा है the horse is tied to a tree; रिबन/फ़ीता ~ to tie a ribbon; उसके हाथ पैर बँधे थे her/his hands and feet were tied. (b) to be bound: मैं अपने वचन से बँधा हूँ I am bound by my word. [vt बाँधना]

³ bāl fc ear of corn; गेहूँ की बालें ears of wheat; बालों में दाने हैं there are grains in the ears of corn.

bahattar a seventy-two: सत्तर दो ~ seventy and two are --; बारह छक्के or नौ अट्ठे ~ twelve sixes या nine eights are --; ~ मेज़ (कुर्सियाँ, लड़के) -- tables (chairs, boys). [see आठ, अस्सी]

bindī fc mark (usually red, put on the forehead by a married woman) सिंदूर की ~ vermilion --; ~ लगाना to apply a --. [cf. टीका put on by men and women].

bigaṛ·nā vi (a) to be spoilt: काम (रंग, लड़का) बिगड़ गया work (colour, boy) was spoilt. (b) to deteriorate: स्थिती बिगड़ गई the situation deteriorated; गर्मियों में मेरा स्वास्थ्य बिगड़ जाता है my health deteriorates in summer. (c) to go out of order: टाइपराइटर बिगड़ा हुआ है the typewriter is out of order; मशीन बिगड़ गई है the machine has gone out of order.
