chhāchhaṭh a = छियासठ q. v.

chhūṭ f (a) liberty; खेलने (खाने- पीने, घूमने-फिरने) की ~ -- to play (eat and drink, walk about). (b) exemption: करों (फ़ीस, सेवा) की ~ -- from taxes (fees, service). (c) concession, rebate: दामो में ~ -- in prices; दस प्रतिशत की ~ ten percent --; ~ की दरों पर at concessional rates. (d) omission: मुझ से छूट हो गई it was an -- on my part. ~ देना to exempt, to give concession/rebate; किसी को ~ मिलती है smb gets exemption/ concession/liberty. [vi छुटना, vt छोड़ना, छुड़ाना]

chhaṛī fc stick, cane [पतली thin, बड़ी big, भारी heavy, मोटी thick, सीधी straight]; ~ से मारना to hit/beat with a --; ~ लेकर चलना to walk with a --; बूढ़े की ~ old man's --.

chhãṭāī fu (a) assortment: काग़ज़ों (चिट्ठियों, पुस्तकों) की ~ -- of papers (letters, books). (b) pruning, trimming: डालों (पत्तों, पौधों) की ~ -- of branches (leaves, plants). ~ करना to prune, to weed out; to sort.

chhip·nā vi to hide, to be covered: हम जंगल में छिप गयें we hid (ourselves) in the wood; कोने में (पेड़ के पीछे, मेज़ के नीचे, चट्टानों में) छिपा था was hiding/hidden in a corner (behind a tree, under the table, among rocks); बहुत से ग्रंथ छिपे पड़े हैं many books are lying hidden; छिपा (हुआ) धन/कोष hidden treasure; सूर्य छिप गया हैं the sun has set. △ छिपा रुस्तम a genius unknown. chhiṭak·nā vi to spread, to scatter; कण इधर उधर छिटक गये particles spread/scattered here and there; चाँदनी छिटक रही थी moonlight was spreading; तारे छिटके the stars shone. [vi छिटकाना]

chhil kā mc (a) सेब (केले, आड़ू) का ~ skin of apple (banana, peach); (का) ~ उतरना to skin, to peel. (b) गेहूँ (चने, जौ) का ~ husk of wheat (gram, barley); (का) ~ उतारना to husk. (c) अंडे (बादाम, मटर) का ~ shell of egg (almond, pea); (का) ~ उतारना to shell.
