lā- pref. without, -less: लाचार helpless; लापरवाह careless; लावारिस heirless; लाइलाज incurable, etc.

lālā mc (a) [in the west for non-Brahmin] respected man, gentleman; [better लाला जी]; generally before names लाला लजपतराय, लाला हंसराज (b) Baniya: ~ की दुकान से from the --'s shop. (c) [in the east for] Kayastha लाला लोग Kayasthas. (d) लाला भइया करके with flattery.

lahar·dār a wavy [बाल/केश hair, रेखा line]; ~ बनाना to wave: बालों को ~ बनाना to wave hair.

lad·vānā, लदाना ladānā vt [caus. of लादना] to cause to load]; मज़दूरों से माल लदवाओ/लदाओ get the goods loaded by the labourers.

lāiṭ fu light: ~ जलाना, बुझाना to put the -- on, -- off; यहाँ ~ नहीं है there is no light here; ~ लाइट ! let there be -- ! = प्रकाश, रोशनी q. v.

lalāṭ mc forehead [symbolic of luck]; ~ की रेखाएँ lines on the --; जो ~ में लिखा है as written on the --, as luck would have it.

likhāvaṭ fu handwriting [बढ़िया nice, गंदी ugly, सुन्दर beautiful].

loṭ-poṭ a rolling and tossing, restless; ~ होना to roll and toss about; वह हँसते हँसते ~ हो गया he rolled and tossed about laughing. (fig.) वह लड़की को देखते ही ~ हो गया he was enamoured of the girl at the first sight; उसे एक हिचकी आई और वह ~ हो गया he had a hiccough and he died.
