ban·nā vi (a) to be made: जूते चमड़े से बनते हैं shoes are made of leather; कारख़ाने में यंत्र बनते हैं instruments are made in a factory; भारत में बना made in India. (b) to be built: मकान बन रहा है house is being built; ईंटों का बना built of bricks. (c) to become: वह राजा बन बैठा he became a king; भतीजा मालिक बन गया the nephew became the owner. (d) to feign: वह अनजान/अंधा बनता है he feigns to be ignorant/blind. (e) वह बनता है he assumes airs; अंत बन गया the end was accomplished; सौदा बन गया the bargain was settled; हजामत बन गई shaving was done; (fig.) was looted; बने रहो may you live ! तुम इसी तरह बने रहना you should persist like this; बनना ठनना/सँवरना to prank, to adorn oneself; वह बनठन कर जा रही है she is strutting. banā-banāyā a ready- made: ~ खाना -- meal; बनी-बनायी पैंट -- pants; बने-बनाये खिलौने -- toys.

be- pref. without, in-, un-: बे-अदब impolite; बे-इंसाफ़ी injustice; बेकार unemployed; बेघर homeless; etc. [see below. There is a large number of such words, mostly, बे be- + noun = adj. or adv Noun is formed by · ī suffix.]

bã̄dh mc dam: सरकता ~ shifting --; भाखड़ा ~ Bhakra -- (in Punjab); हीराकुंड ~ Hira- kund -- (in Orissa); ~ कटता है, टूटता है a -- is eroded, breaks; इंजीनियर गंगा पर ~ बाँध रहे हैं the Engineers are erecting a -- on the Ganga.
