path·rānā vi (a) to be petrified: पेड़ का तना पथरा गया the trunk of the tree was --. (b) [fig.] to be paralysed/stunned: रास्ता देखते-देखते आँखे पथरा गईं my eyes were stunned by waiting incessantly.

pã̄chõ a (all) the five [घोड़े horses, कुर्सियाँ chairs, लड़के boys]. △ ~ उँगलियाँ घी में होना to make the best of an opportunity, to have one's bread buttered on both sides; ~ उँगलियाँ बराबर नहीं होती all of a clan are not alike.

paṅgu a crippled: वह दुर्घटना में ~ हो गया he became a cripple (he was crippled) in the accident; किसी को ~ कर देना to cripple a person. [syn. लूला-लंगड़ा]

pūchh·nā vt (a) to ask: मैं माँ से पूछूँगा I shall ask my mother. मैंने किसी से नहीं पूछा I did not ask anyone; प्रश्न ~ -- a question. (b) to inquire: मैंने उसका नाम और पता पूछा I inquired his/her name and address. (c) to care: योग्यता को कौन पूछता है who cares about ability ? गरीबों को कोई नहीं पूछता no one cares about the poor.

pavan mu [poetic] air, breeze; wind in ~ चक्की windmill. [more common वायु, हवा]

pachhāṛ·nā vt to throw/ knock down, to beat: मैदान में शत्रु को ~ -- an enemy in the (battle)-field; उसने विपक्षी को पछाड़ दिया he knocked down (beat) the rival/opponent.

par·desh mu (a) foreign country: ~ में जा रहना to emigrate to a --. [syn. विदेश] (b) alien/ strange place: ~ में कठिनाइयाँ सहनी पड़ती हैं one has to bear difficulties in an alien place. [also परदेस]

pūs mu the tenth month of Indian calendar, paush: ~ का महीना the paush month; ~ की सर्दी cold in paush.

prayojan mc purpose [ऊँचा lofty, मुख्य chief, घरेलू domestic]; न्याय (बिक्री, यात्रा) का ~ -- of justice (sale, journey); उसका ~ सिद्ध हो गया his -- was attained; हमें इससे क्या ~ what have we to do with it? [syn. उद्देश्य]
