kamānā vt to earn [नाम name, रुपया money, रोटी livelihood]; उसने एक दिन में दस रुपये कमाये he earned ten rupees in a day; △ चमड़ा ~ to clean/curry leather; पाख़ाना ~ to clean a latrine/privy; कमा खाना to live by one's own earnings.

chām mu = चमड़ा leather, hide, skin; कच्चा ~ hide, raw leather; कमाया हुआ ~ tanned leather; △ ~ के दाम चलाना to issue leather coins, to make the best of opportunity.

bachānā vt (a) to save: प्राण/जान (रुपया, संपत्ति, समय) ~ -- life (money, property, time); पुलिस ने बच्चों को बचाया the police saved the children; मौत (विपत्ति, आग, कुमार्ग) से ~ -- from death (calamity, fire, evil path). △ बचाया सो कमाया a penny saved is a penny gained. (b) to protect: ख़तरे से बच्चों को, शत्रु से देश को, धूप से आँखों को ~ -- the children from danger, the country from the enemy, eyes from the sun. (c) defend: किला or देश ~ -- the fort या country (d) to shelter: मकान हमें सरदी और बरसात से बचाता है a house shelters us from cold and rains. (e) बचा रखना to conserve, to put aside, to lay by: स्वास्थ्य या शक्‍ित बचा रखना to conserve one's health or strength; कुछ रुपया बचा रखना to put some money aside, to lay some money by; किसी से पहलू or आँख ~ to avoid smb; बचा लेना [in all the senses above] [vi बचना, n. बचाव]
