mān·nā vt (a) to believe: मानो या न मानो believe it or not; मैं नहीं मानता कि वर्षा हो रही है I do not believe that it is raining; वे ईश्वर को मानते हैं they believe in God. (b) to admit, to confess: वह मान गया कि ग़लती/भूल हो गई he admitted/confessed that there was a mistake; चोर ने अपना अपराध मान लिया the thief admitted/confessed his guilt. (c) to assent, to agree: वह तुरंत मान गया he agreed at once; वह मेरा सुझाव नहीं मानेगा he will not assent/agree to my suggestion. (d) to suppose, to imagine: मान लें कि आप नेता हैं let us suppose/imagine that you are a leader; मान लो कि वह ग़ल्ती पर है suppose he is in wrong. (e) to regard, to recognize: उसे इस विषय का अधिकारी माना जाता है he is recognized/regarded as an authority on this subject; वह उसे अपनी सहेली मानती थी she regarded her as her friend; उसका दावा माना गया his/her claim was recognized. (f) to grant: मैं मानता हूँ कि वह सच्ची है I grant that she is right. (g) [various meanings in contexts] मेरी बात मानो heed what I say; माता-पिता की आज्ञा मानो obey your parents; बुरा मत मानिए don't take it ill; मेरी सलाह मानिए take my advice; किसी का अंकुश (आग्रह, रोब) ~ to submit to one's control/ restraint (insistence, awe); शर्तें ~ to accept terms/conditions.
