mīṭhā I. a (a) sweet [चावल rice, दूध milk, सेब apple, वचन word]; मीठी बात or बोली -- talk या dialect. (b) [various shades] ~ ज़हर sugar-coated poison; ~ ठग sweet-spoken cheat, treacherous person; ~ तेल sesamum oil; ~ दर्द light pain; ~ मौसम temperate season: मीठी छुरी a foe in the guise of a friend; मीठी नज़र affectionate look; मीठी नींद sound sleep; मीठी मार internal hurt. ~ होना to be sweet; ~ करना/बनाना to sweeten; △ मीठी बातों से पेट नहीं भरता fair words butter no parsnips.
