(b) to split: लकड़ी ~ -- wood; बिजली ने पेड़ को दो टुकड़ो में फाड़ डाला the lightning split the old tree in half. phāīlānā vt [vide फैलना] (a) to spread: अफ़वाहें (आतंक, डर, बग़ावत/ विद्रोह, सुगंध) ~ -- rumours (panic, dread, rebellion, fragrance); हम कपड़े फैलाते हैं we spread clothes; मक्खियाँ बीमारी फैलाती हैं flies spread disease; पक्षी ने पंख/पर फैलाये the bird spread its wings (b) to stretch: पाँव/पैर ~ -- one's legs. △ मुँह ~ to gape, to desire much; हाथ ~ to beg for smth, to ask humbly.

phoṛ·nā vt [vide फूंटना] (a) to crack: अंडा (खोपड़ी, बादाम) ~ -- egg (skull, almonds). (b) to break: किसी का सिर ~ -- smb's head; उसने मेरी बोतल फोड़ डाली he/she broke off my bottle. (c) गवाह ~ to make a witness defect; भंडा ~ to divulge a secret. [vi फूटना, syn. तोड़ना]
